Big Chains Being Local: Trader Joe’s

In Be Locally Relevant, Create Community

Trader Joe’s, Your Neighborhood Grocery Store as they call themselves, may be a big chain of stores across the United States, but they know how to stay local. And they keep it quite simple.

Two key local marketing tactics Trader Joe’s uses…

Signage

Each Trader Joe’s makes their signage in house. That allows them to keep it local. Here are a few great examples from our local store in Old Town Alexandria, including the register lane signs named for the local streets.

Giving Back

Trader Joe’s is “committed to being good neighbors, and to us that means taking part in and giving back to our local communities.” They have two programs that are driven locally by each store…

  • Food Donation Programs: Each store has a designated Donations Coordinator, whose responsibilities include working with local food banks, food pantries, and/or soup kitchens in their communities to facilitate donations, seven days a week.
  • In The Neighborhood: The Donations Coordinator also handles all requests for donations and involvement in community events.

It’s great to see a big chain staying local in it’s community!
