Here are five holidays to perk up your May marketing calendar:

May Marketing Holidays

The Kentucky Derby

The running of The Kentucky Derby takes the first Saturday in May. Often called “the greatest two minutes in sports,” the Derby is a great excuse to celebrate with your customers! Host a viewing party at your bar or restaurant (complete with Mint Juleps and Kentucky Hot Brown sandwiches) and invite customers to dress up. Hat contests are always a fun idea!

Cinco De Mayo

Cinco de Mayo (or, the 5th of May) commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). In the United States, the holiday has come to be a celebration of Mexican heritage. Bars or restaurants can take the opportunity (if applicable) to showcase Mexican dishes or beverages! Hiring a traditional mariachi band will make the night even more memorable!

Mother’s Day

In the United States we celebrate Mother’s Day on the 2nd Sunday in May. Retailers should make gift giving easy for husbands, children and others to give gifts to the mothers in their lives! Group special gifts in a prominent display within your store, and offer gifts at a variety of price points. Another fun idea would be to host a card-making event for children. Restaurants can offer customers carry out specials for dads to pick up on their way home!

Graduations

Some high schools and colleges have their graduation ceremonies in May. Don’t miss the opportunity to promote catering services (for your restaurant) or special gift giving opportunities (for your retail shop) to help families celebrate! Check online to see when schools in your area are celebrating their graduates!

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is observed every year in the United States on the last Monday of May. It is the day we remember those who died while serving in the country’s armed forces.

From a less solemn perspective, Memorial Day weekend also serves as the unofficial “kick-off” to summer. A great opportunity for your business to highlight your new summer offerings, products or menu items. If possible, get involved in your community celebrations (barbecues, parties, parades, etc.) and promote weekend-only specials for your customers!

How else will you be celebrating these holidays in May?
